Nothing has ever been written for string quartet more beautiful than the three works that the French Elmire Quartet is performing at Burg Trifels: The wit of late Haydn meets a deeply serious Adagio in the D major quartet from 1796. The second string quartet by Bartók sounds as organically Hungarian as the folk music from the vastness of the countryside, while Beethoven's e-minor quartet is dramatically sharpened like a symphony. In the beautiful Adagio, the heavens open up. The brilliance that the French violinist David Petrlik unfolds with his fellow musicians Yoan Brakha, Hortense Fourier, and Rémi Carlon is among the best that the young string quartet culture in Europe has to offer.
